Week 4

I have been listening for a breath of fresh air from the pulpit since I retired from "the Saints." Today I heard it from this bright young man from Ghana. He presented in a classic African style the theology which calls on people of the way to use their God given skills to make an impact on their communities. By impact he means to lead society to distributive justice, giving real concrete action which 1. reduces the suffering of the poor, 2. frees the prisoners, 3. eliminates oppression, 4. removes the scales from greedy, narcissistic, and power-hungering eyes, and 5. give the world new ways to recover from mistakes such as ignoring climate change, the holocaust, and war. I opine that we, even me, in our western linear one dimensional churches seem to focus on places of worship, attendance, and fund raising only, and have seemingly forgotten how to turn our worship of the love of God into action of being God's love in our broken unjust global society. What breath of fresh air, something powerfully new coming from this young well trained theologian!
Daniel preached with the clarion call that all human beings, created in the image of God are here to positively impact our whole world. he offered this with zest, passion, and a lot of humour. He had the congregation of hundreds of children with him the whole way. He inspired them to reach higher, (always with observance of the presence of the spirit of God), than they ever thought possible in order to solve the horrific conditions facing our world shaking under the pressures of chaos, cruelty, inhumanity, and arrogant fascism. I wondered how many preachers in Canada today are offering the same "call to action" theology, with the real expectations that the majority of their congregants will take up the call and seriously find places to make a real impact. Very impressive!
Sunday, after a leisurely stroll amongst the students, I enjoyed the pleasure of the company of Dr. and Mother Mulli, and the preacher Daniel. Church began about 10:30 and filled with the usual high quality energetic singing and prayers. After the service the Mission Choir stopped, surrounded us as they did last week and sang a couple of songs. I have one on video. It was awesome.
We visited enjoying the pleasure of the company of Preacher Daniel, Dr. Charles and Mother Esther over a leisurely lunch and post lunch coffee. I retired to my cabin to work on a Narrative about the development of MCF Lodwar based on the stories given by Dr. Charles.
Then another Sunday afternoon concert performed by the Mission Choir (pictured top left below). The professor left for Nairobi, Dr. Charles retired for the evening and I ate supper. Then I went to Sunday evening devotions and the great Sing and Shine Sunday Program.
Bottom left and right had photos show a bit of the devotions with Sing and ?Shine Presentations. The evening was a very close second to the inspirational morning worship.
As expected the students asked me to present a bit, and I chose to look at the great gift of Leadership for few minutes. We clapped and cheered and offered prayers and praise all together.
Following which several choirs sang for the Assembly. Modern Dancers performed followed by (my) grade 11s who wanted to present to me personally a number of songs in thanks for the Leadership Program. I was deeply touched and once again experienced a Kairos moment. Shivers and tears nearly overwhelmed me. Then I was led to join the four Dreamers from Mombasa who insisted I sing with them at the top of my lungs. The students went wild, clapping, laughing, and enjoying my most inadequate of voice singing the chorus of the song they had written for me in thanksgiving. I wished them good night in Swahili, we pronounced the /benediction together and that was the second great height of Sunday!
Students were not done with me, several surrounded me asking me questions about me and Canada. One young grade 11 student called Christopher wants to be a journalist, and after our interview promised to write an article about Rev George at MCF. Wow!
